1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

What a great week it was here at Fairfax Villa! So many of our students experienced enrichment outside of the classroom. Kindergarten visited E.C. Lawrence Park and learned more about insects. Our first grade classes took a trip to the National Zoo and sixth grade participated in an all day trip to George Washington’s Mount Vernon! Thank you PTA for allocating funds to offset the price of the field trips for our families. If you were able to join one of these field trips as a chaperone, thank you for spending your time with us!

Our Get2Green team hosted our first environmental spirit week! This afterschool club meets to brainstorm ways to beautify our school and reduce, reuse, and recycle. They have ongoing projects in our courtyard that we look forward to blooming this spring!

We also celebrated our amazing front Office Staff for Administrative Professionals week. Their warm and pleasant demeanor does not go unnoticed as many visitors share how welcoming they feel when they come to the Villa. Silvia Dossmann, Julie Scoville, Kathy Naccarato, and Karen Wells are hands-down the best office staff in FCPS! We appreciate all that they do for our families and staff each and everyday!

Looking forward to attending the 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival Concert tomorrow at Hayfield Secondary School. Three of our 6th graders were selected to participate: Amina Jackson, Regan Crump, and Brooklyn Millan. Ms. Hood and Ms. Gaskins, our music teachers and the students have been practicing for months for this special event and are excited to share their work.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Principal

5.Community Preschool Playdate 5/3

Fairfax Villa is pleased to announce that we will continue to have community peers in our preschool program for the 24-25 school year. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 4-5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.  Feel free to contact us for further explanation of our program. We welcome your thoughts or suggestions, as we are all partners in this effort.

Interested peers and their families are invited to a Preschool Community Peer playdate on May 3rd from 12:30-1:30 p.m. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Janet O’Lare, Special Ed Lead Teacher  ([email protected] ), Dani Rainey, Preschool Teacher ([email protected] ) or Shelia Sobeski, Interim Principal.

6th Grade Musical Showcase 2024  UPDATE

Dear 6th Grade Families,

It was brought to our attention that the Woodson High graduation ceremony is on the same day as our original Showcase date. Because this is a major conflict for many of our Villa families, we have decided to move the Showcase to Wednesday, June 5th, at 7pm.

Our daytime performances for the rest of the school will now be on Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th.

As a reminder, students will need a black shirt and pants/skirt with no logos for the performances. Black shoes are preferred. All other costume pieces and props will be provided by the school. Please let your student’s teacher know if you need assistance with this.

Please make every effort to have your student attend. The 6th Grade Showcase is a long-time Fairfax Villa tradition and once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we want all our students to be a part of it!

We apologize for any inconvenience this date change may cause.

Questions? Please contact Mx. Gaskins or your student’s homeroom teacher.

1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

Our field trips are in full swing! Our sixth graders got a chance to visit the National Gallery of Art Museum in DC! Our kindergarten and first grade students are gearing up for their field trips next week. In addition, the PTA after school sports and run clubs have started! We hope your child gets an opportunity to participate as the weather gets nicer. We are so thankful for our PTA and our school community that makes afterschool events possible! One of our favorite after school events was Bingo Night! Our PTA went above and beyond to make this night fun, full of prizes, concessions, and entertainment!

Prior to Bingo Night, many families joined us in the library for a Parent Education Workshop about establishing healthy routines at home. The presenters made each and every one of the parent participants feel welcomed and valued as they asked questions and gave suggestions. We are thrilled to be able to continue these workshops for our families again next year. More information to come! We are thankful for all of our families and what they bring to the Villa. In light of that premise, we were able to honor our military children on the news this week. Thanks to all who serve!

Lastly, a few staff members attended a Portrait of a Graduate exhibition within our region and came back with many ideas to implement next year. Portrait of a Graduate has been around for a decade! Below you will find the five key attributes that we aim to achieve in our classrooms. We hope you have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Principal

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s homeroom teacher or our school counselor, Virginia Kim.

Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Students and staff enjoyed the solar eclipse! It was so nice to experience this rare event as a school!

1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

This week we got a chance to observe the solar eclipse as a school. It was a great experience of gathering outside all at once to look up at the sky with our eclipse glasses and view the total eclipse as an entire school community! Thanks to everyone who made that possible! In addition, the GMU MEGLteam (Mason Experimental Geometry Lab) hosted a hands-on math experience with first and second grade students. We are excited about this partnership and all of the possibilities moving forward.

We have some updates from the Language Arts world. We want you to be aware of a literacy instruction resource to support your child. We have transformed our literacy instruction to be evidence-based and aligned with reading science, children in grades K-3 are engaging in direct, explicit, systematic phonics instruction. You may see “UFLI At-Home” sheets coming home with your students and these are meant to reinforce and support your child’s learning at home.  UFLI stands for the University of Florida Literacy Institute which has created materials approved by the Virginia Department of Education to support our literacy instruction. In order to understand how to use the sheet, we have videos that can support you.

We have instructions on how to do UFLI At-Home with your child. These videos teach parents how to use the UFLI At-Home sheet for each lesson. You can find these videos in Spanish, English, Vietnamese, Chinese, French, and Arabic. Thank you Nicole, Jingwen, and Maha for recording these videos for our parents! Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Principal

1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

What a wonderful week we have had getting back into routines. Our staff participated in a variety of professional development activities. On Tuesday, teachers started looking at the Basal reader and the new math standards that will be implemented next year.

On Friday, Mrs. Larsen and I met with all the students during their lunch to review our school wide expectations to end the year strong. One of the things we highlighted is the importance of handling and caring for our technology equipment in a safe and careful manner. We appreciate your efforts in reminding your child of the expectation.

Thank you so much to the PTA for all that they do! Recently they helped us fund a new color copier. We are so excited to create some visuals for our students. In addition they have supported our spring field trips by assisting with transportation costs. We are ready to get out and have some fun with hands-on learning experiences that extend our curriculum. If you see a PTA member, please reach out and thank them.

Thank you for all you do to support your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Principal

2.☀️Solar Eclipse Viewing April 8- Updated

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.

A Fairfax Villa parent, Ms. Jessie Crain, works for the National Science Foundation and donated approved protective eyewear for our entire school! Thank you for your donation! If you have concerns about your child participating in this activity with their class, please contact your child’s teacher directly and we will make alternate arrangements.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

3.Meet Our New Family Liaison

We are excited to welcome Whitney Villanueva as our new Family Liaison.  She can be reached at [email protected].  Here is a message from Whitney: I'm Whitney Villanueva, and I'm excited to be part of our school community. As a first-generation American with roots from Honduras and the Caribbean, I have a unique perspective on things. With three years of community service under my belt, I'm no stranger to lending a hand and providing resources where they're needed most.  Having grown up right here, I've seen the challenges our community faces firsthand but I'm eager to help make a difference. Plus, being bilingual in Spanish and English means I can connect with even more people.

5.Notice of Testing in Grades 1-6

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) adopted iReady assessments as an academic universal screener for all elementary school students in grades 1-6. In addition to the iReady assessment, all elementary school students in grades 1-6 complete the Developmental Spelling Analysis (DSA).

The purpose of iReady assessments is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. iReady tests are also used to measure student progress in reading and mathematics skills. The purpose of the DSA is to measure the development of spelling skills.

The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. In grades 1-3, teachers also assess students’ oral reading fluency to fulfill state testing requirements. Based on test results, some students may require additional assessments to further diagnose specific skills that may need support.

All students complete iReady and DSA in fall and spring each year. Depending on fall performance, a student may take an assessment again in the winter. iReady and DSA are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. Your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator will share the specific dates scheduled for testing. You can find information about general timing of iReady and DSA testing on the grade level tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/student-assessment/grade-level-tests).

Additional information can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator (Ms. Hachwi [email protected]).

7.Dress Code Reminder

As the weather warms up, we want to remind all families that students should be dressed comfortably and appropriately for school. Our temperatures can fluctuate in the building, so it is always advised to be dressed in layers. As specified in the Student Rights and Responsibilities, students must wear clothing that does not expose genitalia, chest or buttocks or expose underwear or undergarments. Clothing may not depict or promote illegal, violent, or lewd conduct, or depict or promote the unlawful possession or use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, drug paraphernalia, or other controlled substances. Students should be able to move comfortably and engage in all school activities including physical education and recess in the clothing they are wearing. For further information, please refer to the Student Rights and Responsibilities  https://www.fcps.edu/srr and the FCPS regulation pertaining to dress code specifically (2613.12).

8.AM Kiss and Ride Reminders

A few reminders regarding Kiss and Ride Procedures. For further information, please refer to the Fairfax Villa Parent Handbook: https://fairfaxvillaes.fcps.edu/resources/parent-handbook

1.Principal’s Message

I hope you all have a wonderful spring break and are able to get some rest, relaxation, and time outside.  We have a very busy spring ahead when we return filled with lots of activities to celebrate the progress of our students this year.  Please note the dates for SOL testing below for students in grades 3-6 and do your best to schedule appointments and absences around these dates.  Most of our spring concerts and activities are also listed on the dates at the end of this message. We will continue to update this list weekly - please keep checking each week!

Please note our school office will be closed over spring break. Staff will respond to any messages sent when they return from spring break on April 1st.

Have a wonderful break!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Principal

Our students are working in small math groups with our High Impact Math Tutor!

2.Principal Selection Advisory Panel

The Fairfax Villa Elementary School Principal Advisory panel will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024. If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please complete this form by March 22, 2024. Staff and community members selected to be panelists or alternates for this panel will be contacted by the Human Resources department overseeing this process. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Region 5 Office.

3.Spring Break March 25-29th

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources

The Fairfax Villa Office will be closed March 25-29th and will reopen on April 1.  If you need immediate assistance during March 25-29th please contact Mrs. Sobeski: [email protected].

4.🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

5.Dress Code Reminder

6.☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Here are our Pi Day winners! Pi is used to find the circumference of a circle. Ben Sidki was able to name the most digits of Pi! Congrats sixth grade.

8.🥁 Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a summer camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

⛱️ Summer Camp for Middle Schoolers

All rising middle schoolers are invited to attend a summer of fun and leisure with VIP Camp. VIP Camp — which takes place Monday, July 1, to Thursday, August 1 — is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and programs.

Registration is open. VIP Camp costs $100 to attend. Reach out to your school's after-school specialist for scholarship availability due to financial hardship. This camp is sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools and Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services.

9.SOL Testing Dates

Spring testing is just around the corner. Students in grades 3-6 participate in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Here are the specific dates and times we will be testing here at Fairfax Villa.  Please try to avoid absences on these dates.  If you know your child will be absent, please reach out to our Test Coordinator, Carol Larsen ([email protected]) to make arrangements for a make-up test. All initial testing attempts must be completed by Friday, May 24th. These dates will also be included in the calendar below from here on. *Note that on the fifth grade test dates, fifth and sixth grades will switch lunch and specials times to accommodate the fifth grade tests.

10.Ramadan Photos for Bulletin Board

Ramadan Mubarak! To mark the month of Ramadan, observed by many of our students, some of our 6th grade students are creating a bulletin board to celebrate and share their Ramadan traditions. If your family observes Ramadan, we invite you to send in a photo that represents your own Ramadan traditions and celebrations. Please put your student’s name and teacher on the back of the photo so we can return it later.

Please note: As a new part of our diversity learning and growth at Fairfax Villa, we are featuring holidays from different cultures throughout the year. Although we would like to feature every holiday all our cultures celebrate, our goal is for every student to see at least one holiday that they observe featured during the year.

1.Principal’s Message

This week at Fairfax Villa some of our staff presented our School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) to members of Region 5 and fellow elementary school leaders. Staff shared their expertise, perspective, and passion when presenting our glows and grows in language arts, math, attendance, and behaviors. Our school had the largest team in attendance which speaks volumes to our collective efforts as a staff. Below are some highlights of our presentation.

Schoolwide Score Improvement Fall To Midyear

Literacy Highlights:

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Fall to Winter: 63% to 70%

iReady Fall to Winter: 45% to 59%

Lexia Fall to Winter: 39% to 68%

Math Highlights:

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Fall to Winter: 46% to 57%

iReady Fall to Winter: 35% to 54%

I am so proud of our entire staff for all that they do to support our students, our families, and one another! As partners in your child’s education, please take a moment to complete the Family Engagement Survey that opened on March 3rd. You can find more information below. Your feedback is welcomed and valued.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski,

Principal

2.Spring Break March 25-29th

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources

The Fairfax Villa Office will be closed March 25-29th and will reopen on April 1.  If you should need immediate assistance during March 25-29th please contact Mrs. Sobeski: [email protected].

3.Thank you P.J. Skidoos!

A huge thank you to P.J. Skidoos Restaurant in Fairfax for their help in preparing and providing our staff with hot baked potatoes for an appreciation luncheon on Friday, March 15th.  Our staff loved having a break from making lunch and joining together.

4.☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse April 8

Woodson Math Honor Society joined our 4th and 5th grade students after school to do some hands-on activities!

5.🥁 Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a summer camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

6.SOL Testing Dates

7.Farewell Ms. Freitag

Hello everyone,

It has been a pleasure getting to know and helping families supporting their children at Fairfax Villa and I feel blessed to have known such a caring and talented group of educators and staff.

Thank you for trusting me to assist you and for the opportunity to work with you.

I’m leaving to spend time with my family and finish my Social Work degree and pursue a career in this field and I hope our paths will cross again in the future! My last day at Fairfax Villa will be March 21st.

Thank you,

Ursula Freitag

8.Join a Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation on the opioid crisis in Northern Virginia will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. (Please enter through Door #14). Attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed will be suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Language interpretation will be available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed.

Learn more about the event and register online.

9.🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

11.Supporting Students During Ramadan

Ramadan, one of the holiest times on the Islamic calendar, begins on March 10th. We are here to support students who may need special considerations or accommodations during this time.  If your student will be fasting during Ramadan, please contact their homeroom teacher so that they are aware and able to support your student. Students who are fasting will have the option of joining another class while their class is at lunch. 1.Principal’s Message

This week at Fairfax Villa I was able to observe the TJ Assistive Technology Club (TJ AT Club) in action here at our school. Students at Thomas Jefferson HS must use their Wednesday free period to participate in clubs or academic groups. This club has been around for 20 years! It started as a digital buddy reading group and has since grown! We are fortunate to have the AT Club partner with Fairfax Villa ES this year.  The AT Club has executive board members who are now proficient at using specialized software to help create books, games, and activities that are used with students.

Students in Mrs. Kinerney’s class and Mr. Hoover’s class wrote digital books with their buddies. It was so engaging and a joy to observe. Thanks so much to Mr. Fleming, Assistive Technology Specialist, for setting this up at our school! Please check out this link to view a news segment that aired last year.

Last night I enjoyed the talents of our 5th graders as they sang songs while playing the ukulele. Students gathered in small groups on the stage to perform some well known song hits for their peers, friends and family. Thank you to Ms. Hood and Mx. Gaskins for all that they do to support our students with their musical talents.

As partners in your child’s education, please take a moment to complete the Family Engagement Survey that opened on March 3rd. You can find more information below. Your feedback is welcomed and valued.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski,

Principal

2.Daylight Savings Reminder

Please make sure to adjust your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night, to be ready for the time change at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10th when daylight savings time begins.  Adjust your schedule now to have a smooth transition on Monday!

3.Picture Day Reminder - March 15

Spring Picture Day is coming!  It will be held Friday, March 15.  Class and individual pictures will be taken.  We will be starting at 9:30am and will be finished by 3:30pm. Sixth Graders will take a grade level photo on April 17th. Order forms were sent home.

4.SOL Testing Dates

Fifth graders participated in their ukulele concert! Congrats on a great performance.

5.Math Enrichment Session with the WTW Math Honor Society

On Thursday, March 14, the Woodson Math Honor Society students are coming to Fairfax Villa Elementary School to offer the 4th and 5th grade students a fun and exciting enrichment experience!

Your student will complete activities with fractions, decimals, and order of operations. They will also have a chance to interact with great Woodson students!

This event will begin promptly after school at 4:05 p.m. in the cafeteria and end at 5:15 p.m. If your student is interested in attending, please sign the permission slip distributed by classroom teachers and return to your student’s teacher by Monday, March 11th.

6.Celebrations of Lexia!

28 = Lexia Certificates given this past week!

1188= Lexia Certificates given this year!

70% =  Students working at or above grade level!

Parents - ask your child to show you their Lexia Superstar Certificates for the completion of each level!

Congratulations to all of our students who are working hard on their Lexia lessons and making so much progress. At the beginning of the school year, 32% of our students in grades K-6 were working on grade level material in Lexia. It is VERY important that families do NOT help students with the Lexia lessons. We need a true picture of what they have learned so that teachers can best support. Assisting students will alter weekly learning results.

Practice Lexia at home:

  • Log onto https://clever.com/in/fairfax/student/portal using their FCPS Google account.
  • Click on the Lexia icon. It is strongly recommended that our K-6 graders spend 15-30 minutes each night learning with this Lexia.
  • Students can also login to Lexia through their Schoology account. After they go to https://lms.fcps.edu/ and log into Schoology, click on the waffle in the upper right corner, click on Clever, and then Lexia.
7.Woodson High School - The Last Firefly Play

Woodson High School Drama class will be presenting a public performance, free for any student, with a pay what you can ticket option for parents between $0-20. One day only on Saturday, March 9th at 10am! Here is the link for tickets or you can pay at the door. The Last Firefly Tickets | Fairfax, VA | Woodson High School Theatre (etix.com)

The Last Firefly description: The fantastic story of Boom, the child of Thunder, is a mythical adventure about discovering one's inner strength. After being forced out of the home at the hand of a cruel stepfather, Boom sets out on a journey of self-discovery where battles against the forces of nature are courageously fought.

Recommended for grade 2nd and above - because it contains mild theatrical violence and scenes of action that may frighten younger children.

8.Ramadan Photos for Bulletin Board

Ramadan Mubarak! To mark the month of Ramadan, observed by many of our students, some of our 6th grade students are creating a bulletin board to celebrate and share their Ramadan traditions. If your family observes Ramadan, we invite you to send in a photo that represents your own Ramadan traditions and celebrations. Please put your student’s name and teacher on the back of the photo so we can return it later.

Please note: As a new part of our diversity learning and growth at Fairfax Villa, we are featuring holidays from different cultures throughout the year. 13.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We are making great progress to meet our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

  • A study of weather-related absences in Massachusetts found that each missed day affected a student’s test scores and grades. This was especially true on snowy days when school stayed open but some students missed class.
  • Please remember, Tuesday, March 5th is a school holiday.  We are eager to welcome your children back in school on Wednesday, March 6th.

1.Principal’s Message

This week at the Villa had a big math focus! Our second and third grade teachers participated in an AVMR (Add+ Vantage Math Recovery) learning workshop. AVMR supports advancing student understanding and numeracy development. We are excited for all the new learning ahead. Our kindergarten teachers participated in whole group and small group ST math classroom modeling. They dove deep into decoding math learning puzzles. Students have access to ST Math and Lexia at home through their Schoology accounts if you would like to explore these resources.

To kick off our Read Across America week Ms. Choi and Mrs. Case hosted a “book tasting” for each class. Students were exposed to literature they may not have chosen otherwise in a creative restaurant setting. We are so grateful for their efforts this week to foster a fun learning environment and enhance the learning experience. You can view some photos from the “book tasting” below.

We also had classroom mystery readers, after school soccer, hip-hop dance, and Young Rembrandts club. Thank you to the PTA and teachers for their afterschool engagement support.

As partners in your child’s education, please take a moment to complete the Family Engagement Survey that opens on March 3rd. Your feedback is welcomed and valued.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski,

Principal

4.Sixth Grade Middle School Registration Forms

12.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Students in Ms. Conley-Baldwin’s class working on positive and negative charges in science!

1.Principal’s Message

This week at the Villa, our fourth grade students had a visit from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. They learned about the Jamestown Colony and the American Revolution with hands-on activities and a guest speaker. In addition, our Get 2 Green after school team worked on gathering resources for our indoor vegetable garden in the cafeteria. Students will be able to take home vegetables like bell peppers and lettuce once they are ready. The whole school will get to witness the growing process as students will get to observe them during lunchtime.  We are so proud of all our students who work hard to beautify our school and promote environmentally friendly initiatives!

Our Positivity Project team met after school to work on our new Fairfax Villa tree project. They will be putting what they love to learn on our hallway tree. We look forward to their additions.

We are so grateful to all of our parents who have continued to support our students by volunteering, becoming classroom mystery readers, and joining classroom projects! Your ongoing family engagement makes such a difference in the lives of our students.

As partners in your child’s education, please take a moment to complete the Family Engagement Survey that opens on March 3rd. Your feedback is welcomed and valued.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski,

Principal

9.Eating Disorders Resources

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

The 100th day of school was a blast! We are 100 days smarter!

1.Principal’s Message

Wow! We had an exciting week of learning filled with many special activities.  Last week we celebrated the progress of our band students during in-school assemblies on Wednesday, and a performance for their families that evening.  On Thursday, our kindergartners led our school celebration of the 100th day of school with a parade, followed by lots of fun classroom activities.

On Friday, Mrs. Larsen (our interim assistant principal) and I met with students during their lunch time for a mid-year review of behavior expectations.  This year we are especially focused on being safe going to and from school and expectations for the playground and cafeteria.

We would appreciate your support with reinforcing the expectations during your family chats.

Recess expectations:

  • Play tag on the field, where it is wide open and free of steel poles and swings in motion
  • Play all ball sports except for what the blacktop is designed for (basketball & 4 square)  on the field
  • Be a good sport, make it a fun time

Bus expectations:

  • Sit down and face front
  • Talk with a level 2 voice/inside voice with the person sitting next to you
  • Enjoy the scenic route between destinations
  • Listen to the bus driver and the patrols who are there to keep you safe
  • Electronic devices (cell phones) are off and inside the backpack
  • Food and drinks cannot be consumed on the bus

Last week we also celebrate our wonderful counselors, Ms. Kim ([email protected]) and Ms. Donovan ([email protected]), during National School Counseling Week.  They do so much for our students and families.  If you have a minute, send them a note to share your appreciation.

On Friday, February 9th, we celebrated the many cultures that encompass our school at our PTA’s Annual Heritage Night. Our gym was filled with many wonderful Villa families and teachers sharing their artifacts, food, photographs, and information about their heritage. A huge thank you to our PTA board and committee members for creating such a magical night!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski, Principal

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

7.SEL Screener and Opt-Out

Students in grades 3-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The SEL screener will take place from February 26th until March 15th. If you would like your child to be opted out, please return your opt out form to the main office by February 12th, 2024.

8.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We are making great progress to meet our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

- Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

- Children who miss too much school in kindergarten are less likely to read well by third grade. By middle school, absenteeism can predict who will graduate from high school.
