Students in Ms. Conley-Baldwin’s class working on positive and negative charges in science!

1.Principal’s Message

This week at the Villa, our fourth grade students had a visit from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. They learned about the Jamestown Colony and the American Revolution with hands-on activities and a guest speaker. In addition, our Get 2 Green after school team worked on gathering resources for our indoor vegetable garden in the cafeteria. Students will be able to take home vegetables like bell peppers and lettuce once they are ready. The whole school will get to witness the growing process as students will get to observe them during lunchtime.  We are so proud of all our students who work hard to beautify our school and promote environmentally friendly initiatives!

Our Positivity Project team met after school to work on our new Fairfax Villa tree project. They will be putting what they love to learn on our hallway tree. We look forward to their additions.

We are so grateful to all of our parents who have continued to support our students by volunteering, becoming classroom mystery readers, and joining classroom projects! Your ongoing family engagement makes such a difference in the lives of our students.

As partners in your child’s education, please take a moment to complete the Family Engagement Survey that opens on March 3rd. Your feedback is welcomed and valued.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski,

Principal

Ramadan, one of the holiest times on the Islamic calendar, begins on March 10th. We are here to support students who may need special considerations or accommodations during this time.  If your student will be fasting during Ramadan, please contact their homeroom teacher so that they are aware and able to support your student. Students who are fasting will have the option of joining another class while their class is at lunch. If your student is observing restrictions regarding music, please contact Mary Gaskins ([email protected] or via Talking Points) for information about accommodations we can provide in the music room.

4.Family Engagement Survey

Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

9.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We are making great progress to meet our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

  • A study of weather-related absences in Massachusetts found that each missed day affected a student’s test scores and grades. This was especially true on snowy days when school stayed open but some students missed class.
  • Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

9.Eating Disorders Resources

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

The 100th day of school was a blast! We are 100 days smarter!

1.Principal’s Message

Wow! We had an exciting week of learning filled with many special activities.  Last week we celebrated the progress of our band students during in-school assemblies on Wednesday, and a performance for their families that evening.  On Thursday, our kindergartners led our school celebration of the 100th day of school with a parade, followed by lots of fun classroom activities.

On Friday, Mrs. Larsen (our interim assistant principal) and I met with students during their lunch time for a mid-year review of behavior expectations.  This year we are especially focused on being safe going to and from school and expectations for the playground and cafeteria.

We would appreciate your support with reinforcing the expectations during your family chats.

Recess expectations:

  • Play tag on the field, where it is wide open and free of steel poles and swings in motion
  • Play all ball sports except for what the blacktop is designed for (basketball & 4 square)  on the field
  • Be a good sport, make it a fun time

Bus expectations:

  • Sit down and face front
  • Talk with a level 2 voice/inside voice with the person sitting next to you
  • Enjoy the scenic route between destinations
  • Listen to the bus driver and the patrols who are there to keep you safe
  • Electronic devices (cell phones) are off and inside the backpack
  • Food and drinks cannot be consumed on the bus

Last week we also celebrate our wonderful counselors, Ms. Kim ([email protected]) and Ms. Donovan ([email protected]), during National School Counseling Week.  They do so much for our students and families.  If you have a minute, send them a note to share your appreciation.

On Friday, February 9th, we celebrated the many cultures that encompass our school at our PTA’s Annual Heritage Night. Our gym was filled with many wonderful Villa families and teachers sharing their artifacts, food, photographs, and information about their heritage. A huge thank you to our PTA board and committee members for creating such a magical night!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski, Principal

7.SEL Screener and Opt-Out

Students in grades 3-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The SEL screener will take place from February 26th until March 15th. If you would like your child to be opted out, please return your opt out form to the main office by February 12th, 2024.

8.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We are making great progress to meet our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

- Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

- Children who miss too much school in kindergarten are less likely to read well by third grade. By middle school, absenteeism can predict who will graduate from high school.

Farewell Mr. Gerstner! We wish you all the best at Virginia Run! 1.Welcome New Assistant Principal

We are excited to welcome Mrs. Carol Larsen as the interim assistant principal.

Mrs. Carol Larsen has lived in Centreville, Virginia most of her life.  She is an alumnus of Fairfax County Public Schools and is a graduate of Chantilly High School.  Mrs. Larsen graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music.  She was a proud member of the Marching Royal Dukes marching band (piccolo) all four years.  She earned graduate degrees from George Mason University in Special Education and Educational Leadership.  Mrs. Larsen started her career in FCPS at Poplar Tree Elementary, teaching first and second grades.  As a school administrator, she served as principal of Deer Park Elementary, and assistant principal of Stone Middle School and Poplar Tree Elementary.  Mrs. Larsen retired from FCPS after 31 years of service in June 2023.

Mrs. Larsen lives in Centreville, Virginia with her husband, Lee, who is a general music teacher at Rolling Valley ES, her daughter, Jackie, who is a student at Westfield HS, and their two dogs, Lucky and Cooper.  Mrs. Larsen enjoys attending and participating in music activities with her family, she sings in a choir, and still plays her flute. She also loves to read.

Mrs. Larsen is excited to join the Fairfax Villa community and looks forward to getting to know the students and their families.

4.Lunar New Year Bulletin Board

Help us celebrate the Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year is celebrated in many cultures, and this year it falls on February 10th. To celebrate this holiday, we are collecting photos of our students and families who celebrate to put up on a bulletin board in the hallway. If you would like to share a photo of your student or family celebrating the Lunar New Year, please send the photo to school with your student’s name and teacher written on the back. We would love to see photos of special decorations, clothing, or activities!

Please contact Mary Gaskins [email protected] if you have any questions!

5.Spirit Night Fundraiser

When: February 20, 5-8pm

Where: Old Dominion Pizza

3950 University Dr #102

Fairfax, VA 22030

Why: Fairfax Villa will receive 10% of all sales made from 5-8pm. No code needed and any sales, including delivery orders, from any customer!

6.SEL Screener and Opt-Out

Students in grades 3-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The SEL screener will take place from February 26th until March 15th. If you would like your child to be opted out, please return your opt out form to the main office by February 12th, 2024.

7.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
  • Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.
  • Children who miss too much school in kindergarten are less likely to read well by third grade. By middle school, absenteeism can predict who will graduate from high school.
